There’s something truly magical about rediscovering old crafting techniques. In our fast-paced world filled with new crafting tools and products, we sometimes forget the simple joys and endless possibilities that come with tried-and-true methods. Recently, I had the pleasure of revisiting a beloved technique from my early days of stamping: using watercolor pencils with a blender pen. The result? A stunning Simply Zinnias card that combines nostalgia with vibrant creativity.

Simply Zinnias watercolor card

A Walk Down Memory Lane

Eighteen years ago, when I first started stamping, I fell in love with watercoloring. The ability to blend colors without the mess of water was a true benefit. Over the years, new products and tools took the spotlight, and my trusty blender pens found their way to the back of my crafting drawer. That was until a recent organizing spree unearthed one of these gems, and I couldn’t resist trying my hand at this technique again.

The Simply Zinnias Card

I had just received one the new Online Exclusive releases, Simply Zinnias, and it was perfect to rekindle my love for watercolor pencils. Here’s how I created this beautiful card:

  1. Stamp the Image: I started by stamping the zinnias image from the Simply Zinnias set onto basic white paper using Staz On ink. This ensures that the lines won’t smudge when blending.
  2. Coloring with Watercolor Pencils: Using a few key colors from my watercolor pencil set, I lightly colored the stamped images firm strokes in some areas and soft strokes in others. Remember, you don’t need to cover every inch with pencil; the magic happens when you blend.
  3. Blending: With my rediscovered blender pen in hand, I started blending the colors. The tip of the pen works wonders in smoothing out pencil strokes and creating a watercolor effect. A handy tip: you can use a single blender pen for multiple colors by simply cleaning the tip on a paper towel between colors.
  4. Finishing Touches: Once the coloring was complete, I assembled the card. The vibrant zinnias deserved a bold frame, so I opted for a rich, textured background that complemented the colors beautifully. A simple sentiment, “Words fail to express my gratitude,” added the perfect finishing touch.

Tips for Success

  • Blender Pen Maintenance: Regularly clean the tip of your blender pen on a paper towel to prevent color contamination and keep the lid on to extend its life.
  • Paper Choice: Use high-quality watercolor paper or thick cardstock to handle the moisture and blending without warping.
  • Practice Makes Perfect: Experiment with different color combinations and blending techniques on scrap paper before working on your final piece.

Endless Possibilities

With just a single box of watercolor pencils and a blender pen, the possibilities are endless. Whether you’re revisiting this technique or trying it for the first time, it’s a delightful way to add vibrant, blended colors to your projects without the fuss of water.
