Hey stampers, welcome back to Makin’ It Monday!

Happy Monday, Crafting Friends!

Welcome to another Makin’ It Monday! Today, I’m thrilled to share a beautifully simple card featuring the Simply Zinnia stamp set, along with an oldie but goody watercolor pencil and blender pen technique.

Simply Zinnia greeting card

The Simply Zinnia Card:

This card showcases the lovely zinnia flowers from the Simply Zinnia stamp set, stamped in crisp Black StazOn Ink. The card base is made of a bright and colorful Berry Burst cardstock, which perfectly complements the colorful zinnia flowers. A layer of Basic Black cardstock frames the stamped image, adding depth and contrast, while the greeting is elegantly displayed on a strip of soft Bubble Bath cardstock.

The Faux Watercolor Technique:

The magic of this card lies in the watercolor pencil and blender pen technique. Here’s a closer look at how it works:

  1. Stamping: Using Black StazOn Ink ensures that the stamped image remains sharp and doesn’t bleed when color is applied. This ink is not only ideal but necessary for watercolor techniques.
  2. Coloring: Watercolor pencils are used to color in the zinnia flowers. By applying varied pressure, you can create a dynamic range of colors—pressing harder for darker shades and softer for lighter ones. This method gives the flowers a lifelike appearance, capturing their natural beauty.
  3. Blending: The blender pen is then used to smooth out the pencil strokes, creating a seamless watercolor effect. This tool allows you to blend colors effortlessly, enhancing the vibrancy and depth of the image. All without the potential mess of water. Be sure to clean the blender pen between colors by simply swiping it on a paper towel between colors. One of the beauties of a blender pen is that the color is not absorbed into the pen it just lays on it so cleanup is easy and your blender pen will last you a very long time.

The Result:

The finished card is a charming, vibrant creation that captures the essence of summer blooms. This classic watercolor pencil and blender pen technique adds a unique touch, making the zinnias pop against the bold Berry Burst background. This card is perfect for expressing gratitude, with its heartfelt greeting and stunning floral design.

Cutting Sizes for this Simply Zinnia card:

Here’s a simple list of the cardstock cutting sizes used in this card:

  • Berry Burst cardstock (base): 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″
  • Basic Black cardstock (layer): 5″ x 3 3/4″
  • Basic White cardstock (stamped image): 4 7/8″ x 3 5/8″
  • Bubble Bath cardstock (greeting): 4″ x 3/4″

Personal Touch:

Using the Simply Zinnia stamp set with this technique brings back the joy of simple coloring, reminiscent of childhood days spent with crayons and coloring books. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the simplest techniques can yield the most beautiful results.
